Dr. Do explains mouthwash

Your Mouthwash is Turning Your Teeth BROWN!

In my previous blog post, I mentioned all the acidic mouthwashes that could potentially be removing the calcium from your teeth.  Well, in this segment I talk to you about the mouthwash that could potentially turn your teeth brown!

It’s strange because this particular mouthwash is overwhelmingly popular with my patients simply because of the way the bottle is presented to you. The bottle comes in a diamond shape and is very shiny.  It exudes cleanliness.   But who would have thought that something so clean looking could make your teeth so dirty looking.

The mouthwash that turns your teeth brown is Crest Pro Health.

Now, why does it turn your teeth brown?  Crest Pro Health has an anti-gingivitis medication called Cetylpyridinium Chloride that causes these brown stains.  Most of my patients notice these stains occur along the gum line and in between the teeth.  Essentially where the bristles of the toothbrush don’t reach.

Just memorize the first five letter of the ingredient: C-E-T-Y-L.  That way if you happen to purchase a generic mouthwash, check to see if it’s in the ingredients list.

So, watch out if you’re noticing your teeth turning brown.  You might want to look to your mouthwash as a possible culprit.

Until next time!  Have a nice day!
